We've had not much but gloom here at the beach in the evenings for the past couple of months. I've been trying to nab the green flash ever since I got my Z 180-600mm back in April. I just realized I owe you an article on how to shoot this.
The green flash is a mystical phenomenon where the last thing you see as the sun dips below the horizon is a brilliant moment of pure emerald green, as if it came from a LASER. Usually the only people who know what it looks like are sailors, surfers and people who live by the sea, as it's rare and you have to be at the ocean every day for sunset. It happens on extremely clear days when green and maybe blue light passes through the atmosphere, rather than the sun turning the usual red at the last moment.
I owe you an article explaining this and how to shoot it, but here's the best I got last night on a night where it didn't really happen:

On a typical day like yesterday (assuming it's not cloudy), you'll get just little green fringes on the upper vestiges of the disk of the sun. Ideally shoot this with an astronomical telescope, while the Nikon Z 180-600mm VR is so long it works well handheld.

I'm loving my Z 180-600mm. So long as my Z8 actually focuses properly (It's a Nikon Z thing that every so often it simply misses), every shot is ultra sharp and super easy to handhold at 600mm. I'm like a hundred feet away and I can read all the lettering off the tires and the aluminium rims. Love this lens!

No Sales Tax & 5% off: Canon sale at B&H.
This deal is if you use the B&H "Payboo" credit card, which is a clever scheme invented at B&H which lets them pay the sales tax for us for free if you use this card to pay. The catch is that this program is designed expecting that you'll paid the balance in full as soon as it's due. If you don't pay it when it's due, the interest rate is sky high, but assuming you have the cash in the first place, this is a genuine way to save money that I've not seen anywhere else.

This is a chunky (82mm filters, 33.5 oz./950g) lens with a limited range but ultra high speed and low price. You people know who you are, personally I'm loving my RF 24-105mm f/2.8 L IS USM, but we all have different wants. This Sigma is less than half the price of the 24-105/2.8.
This very limited zoom range reminds me of my ancient Nikon 28~45mm f/4.5 AI, the world's first zoom that went as wide as 28mm:

The Nikon 28~45mm f/4.5 AI was the world's widest zoom lens for a 35mm camera when it came out in 1975. Canon bested it with the FD 28-50mm f/3.5 the next year in 1976, and then with the earth-shattering FD 24-35mm f/3.5 S.S.C. Aspherical of 1978.
What you see when using any of these lenses, including the new Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8, is that they don't really zoom. While these were amazing back in the 1970s, just as were LED digital watches, in reality today these lenses don't do much much of anything as you turn the zoom ring. 28 to 45mm is only a 1.6:1 zoom ratio, which today looks like almost no change. These are really just 35mm lenses with a little bit of stretch either way.

Do I Still Shoot Film?
A reader asks, as he hasn't seem me talk about or publish any film shots since about 2013.
Great question!
I haven’t shot film since then. I did shoot some 120 in my HASSELBLAD in 2016, but never bothered to do anything with it other than pull out one snap just now in response, published for the first time above.
Ever since DSLRs hit 24MP, I’ve gotten better results on digital.
I looked at some older digital images from 2004 as shot on my Nikon D70 recently, and they’re so horrible they remind of why I used to love film (I got better results on film up to about 2013), but ever since automatic lens corrections and dynamic range optimization and 24 MP became standard in 2013, I’ve long since graduated past film.
This said, my work is all about color. For B&W I still love how film looks over digital — but don’t try this on 35mm, which is way too grainy for anything but special grain effects. Stick to 120 and 4x5 for film for serious work, unless of course you just like the process or a particular look you get.

This oldest autofocus lens is just as sharp as the others and has even a little more working distance and more precise manual focus and works great on an EF to RF adapter on Canon mirrorless, however it also has no optical stabilization and additionally always requires you to move a switch to get between auto and manual focus. It's only about $175 used if you know How to Win at eBay.

Viltrox 16mm f/1.8, Nikon Z version. bigger.

I just opened mine (full review coming), and I'm impressed. It seems much nicer than anything directly from Nikon, especially compared to Nikon's closest Z 20mm f/1.8, because it:
Adds a real aperture ring.
Better than any other brand's aperture rings (like on the Canon RF 24-105mm f/2.8L or anything from Sony), in any mode when you select an aperture, it sets that aperture. If you're in P mode it effective puts you in A mode, and in S mode it effectively puts you in M mode. Unlike other brands, you don't have to change the camera's mode for this to work most of the time; just move the ring and bingo!, you've forced it to that aperture. (Leave this ring in "A" for the aperture to be selected from the camera.)
Better made out of all metal.
Stops down to f/22, not just f/16.
Adds a programmable Function button.
Adds a second Fn2 button, but on my Z8 firmware 2.00 it doesn't do anything yet.
Adds a color LCD panel, whicis bigger and works better than any of the goofy little OLEDs Nikon offered on a couple of its oldest Z lenses.
It seems fine optically. It might not be space-grade like the Z 20mm f/1.8, but overall it feels much nicer. I'll be letting you know, but for me it's certainly good enough. It might be softer in the corners wide-open, but we'll see. It's always suer-sharp in the center, and in the corners stopped down a little.

I'm particularly proud of my product photos, hand crafted in my studio. It's always a bear to get accurate and consistent shot-to-shot rendition of the pale white paint Canon uses on these lenses, and I think I did a decent job for the first time.
Sadly no great action photos, at which this lens excels. It has nearly instantaneous autofocus. I really want to get dogs jumping up to catch a ball in the ocean backlit by sunset, but conditions weren't in my favor these past weeks — too much May gray.

As I've mentioned before, my reviews track the prices of each camera from when it was new through today. In the case of the R6 II's prices, my review shows you exactly this; the last time it was only $1,999 was from the 7th through the 16th of December 2023.
World's Best? YES! As my review says, I've shot everything that's been made pretty much since the 1940s, and the R6 Mark II is the best camera I've ever used. It's not just technical image quality; it's also its flawless autofocus and magnificent ergonomics and its high speed, making it ideal for landscapes as well as sports and action. You can pay more, and we all have our preferences, but you can't get get a better camera at any price than the R6 Mark II.
I pity all of you with Nikon Z8s. I've been shooting mine with my new Z 28-400mm and Z 180-600mm, and I forgot how bad is the Nikon Z system's autofocus. While Nikon shooters are used to having maybe one frame out of every ten out-of-focus in action sequences, I don't have that problem on Canon, with which almost all my shots are in perfect focus. Canon used to have this problem back in the 1990s, while today the problem is in most, if not all, of the Nikon Z cameras. Sorry, Nikon Z autofocus is poor, meaning that too often it just misses with moving things.
Heh heh, this is the benefit of not taking ads or favors from camera companies, which means I can tell the truth, as I always do, without any commercial bias.

NEW: What is Atmospheric Heat Shimmer?
This is an an issue with all scopes and ultra telephotos, and is the limiting factor in sharpness with the new Nikon Z 28-400mm at 400mm, so I figured it was time to expose this defect in our atmosphere.
