This works on all Sony E-mount cameras, full-frame and crop-sensor. This includes all the NEX, A9, A7, A6xxx and A5xxx series cameras.

It will not work on any Minolta MAXXUM 35mm SLR or any Sony A-mount DSLR. Those use the old A mount which was actually the Minolta MAXXUM mount from 1987.

This Sony 70-200 2.8 GM OSS II is the best 70-200 available for Sony. It's sharp, focuses fast and super close, has three focus lock buttons, has great stabilization and a magnificent 11-blade diaphragm.

 

Autofocus       performance       top

Autofocus is fast, but not instantaneous. It's good.

Autofocus is completely silent unless you hold it to your ear. You can shoot with a silent camera in restricted, sensitive and prohibited areas without being noticed.

There are three focus lock buttons around the front. Hold any to lock focus.

 

Manual Focus       performance       top

Manual focus is perfect!

It's completely electronic, and Sony finally has it perfected.

 

Focus Breathing       performance       top

Focus breathing is the image changing size as focused in and out. It's important to cinematographers because it looks funny if the image changes size as focus gets pulled back and forth between actors. If the lens does this, the image "breathes" by growing and contracting slightly as the dialog goes back and forth.

Breathing is minor in the Sony 70-200/2.8 II. The image gets slightly larger as focussed more closely.

 

Bokeh       performance       top

Bokeh, the feel or quality of out-of-focus areas as opposed to how far out of focus they are, is excellent. Backgrounds just melt away.

This Sony 70-200/2.8 GM OSS II handles the same as other 70-200/2.8 lenses, and is a cosmetic copy of the Canon. It's the same colors and has the same switches in the same places as Canon has used for years, which is good.

Zooming is internal and the zoom ring is easily adjusted with a single fingertip. It might take two fingers if pointed up or down.

There is no zoom creep and zooming is perfectly spaced; it's easy to set precise framing anywhere in the range.

The tripod collar has no 90º clicks.

 

Falloff       performance       top

Falloff is invisible with the camera's default "Shading Correction" ON.

Macro       performance       top

Macro gets very close and stays reasonably sharp wide-open. It's not that sharp wide-open at f/2.8 at macro distances, but so what; stopped down it's fine.

It focuses closer at 70mm and gives a slightly higher reproduction ratio.

Spherochromatism       performance       top

Spherochromatism, also called "color bokeh" by laymen, can cause colored fringes on out-of-focus highlights, usually seen as green fringes on backgrounds and magenta fringes on foregrounds with fast, long lenses shot wide open.

It is an advanced form of chromatic aberration in a different dimension than lateral color. Spherochromatism is most commonly seen in fast lenses of moderate focal length when shooting contrasty items at full aperture. It goes away as stopped down.

This Sony has moderate amout of yellow-green/purple spherochromatism. This is good for portraits since it helps smooth foliage in backgrounds, but bad for cinematography since it can lead to weird fringes on out-of-focus bright areas and points of light.

There's no manual-focus override in AF-C mode; use DMF or AF-S.

 

Full Time DMF

Leave this ON for full-time manual-focus override.

This is the focus limiter.

Leave it at FULL unless the lens gets lost and slows you down "hunting" for things closer than 10 feet (3 meters). If it does, set it to ∞-3m and it won't autofocus closer than 10 feet (3m).

 

OSS ("Optical Steady Shot")

Leave this ON unless you're making long exposures on a tripod.

Leave it at MODE 1 unless you're panning. Use MODE 2 if you're panning.

 

Iris Lock

This is not an iris lock.

This is a lock to prevent the aperture ring from moving between the A and individual f/stop settings.

Use it if you don't want to knock the ring from A to the manual settings, or don't want the ring to be able to go to the A setting from the manual settings

Focus Lock Buttons

These are the three unmarked round buttons between the focus and zoom rings.

Hold any of them to lock autofocus.

They can be used for recomposition, or if your target runs behind an obstruction for a moment.

This is the best 70-200 zoom ever made for full-frame Sony cameras. It's also the lightest 70-200/2.8 lens ever made, for any camera. I LOVE how light it is, and with its stellar optical perfornce, it's awesome.

I use a clear (UV) protective filter instead of a cap so I'm always ready to shoot instantly. I only use a cap when I throw this in a bag with other gear without padding — which is never. The UV filter never gets in the way, and never gets lost, either.

The best protective filter is the 77mm Hoya multicoated HD3 UV which uses hardened glass and repels dirt and fingerprints.

For less money, the B+W 77mm 010 is an excellent filter, as is the multicoated version and the basic multicoated Hoya filters or the 77mm Nikon Clear (NC - UV), but the Hoya HD3 is the toughest and the best.

Filters last a lifetime, so you may as well get the best. The Hoya HD3 stays cleaner than the others since it repels oil and dirt, and will outlast this lens.

All these filters are just as sharp and take the same pictures, the difference is how much abuse they'll take and stay clean and stay in one piece. Since filters last a lifetime or more, there's no reason not to buy the best as it will last you for the next 40 years. Filters aren't throwaways like digital cameras which we replace every few years, like it or not. I'm still using filters I bought back in the 1970s!
