Canon EF to RF adapter

Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R (lets us use all EF and all EF-S lenses on EOS-R cameras, weighs 4.435 oz./125.7g, $199). bigger. There are four different versions, see below for where to get them and what they do.

The EOS-R does a brilliant job of correcting distortion and lateral color fringes in my old 14mm lens.

Use any of these mount adapters and all Canon EF and EF-S lenses made since 1987 work flawlessly, with 100% performance with all features on all lenses, on the EOS-R system.

The EOS-R defaults to correcting lens aberations automatically with most EF lenses. With EF lenses introduced since about 1992 the EOS-R has correction for distortion and falloff, and even a digital lens optimizer. You can switch any of these added features off at MENU > CAMERA page 2 > Lens aberration correction.

There are four different adapters. They differ only in features; they all do the same adapting with all of the same lenses. Each has a mount which accepts all EF and all EF-S lenses. They only have air inside; they have no optics.

All are 24.00mm thick from flange to flange. The EOS-R flange focal distance (FFD) is 20.00mm and the EOS EF FFD is 44.00mm, so 44 - 20 = 24.

The difference between them is that the base model Mount Adapter EF-EOS R just adapts the lens. Everything works, but it has no other features.

The next model Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R adds an extra control ring. I prefer this version and it's the one shown at the top of the page.

The third model Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A adds a polarizing filter instead of the control ring, and the last Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Variable ND Filter A adds a variable ND filter instead.

Mount Adapter EF-EOS R

Canon EF to RF adapter

Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

This is the least expensive, plain adapter.

$99, Canon part number 2971C002, ships October 2018. (also at B&H.)

Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R

Canon EF to RF adapter

Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

This is my favorite. It's the only one with an extra programmable control ring. Its serial number is expertly engraved on the bottom of the rear mount.

$199, Canon part number 2972C002, also at B&H.

Mine weighs 4.435 oz. (125.7g).

Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A

Canon EF to RF adapter

Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A. bigger.

This one has no control ring, and in its place puts a drop-in filter holder for a polarizing filter.

$299, Canon part number 3442C002, also at B&H.

Now you can use a polarizer with all your EF lenses, especially with ultra-ultrawides and fisheyes that have no front filter threads. Caution, it usually looks bad to use polarizers on ultrawide lenses.

Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Filter Variable ND filter A

Canon EF to RF adapter

Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Filter Variable ND filter A. bigger.

This one also drops the control ring, and in its place puts a mechanism to make a variable neutral density filter.

Now you can use a variable ND with ultra-ultrawides and fisheyes!

$399, Canon part number 3443C002, also at B&H.

How good is it? I've already tried my EF 50mm f/1.0 L and it seems to focus faster than ever on the EOS-R, and focus is always dead-on, not iffy as it always was on SLRs and DSLRs.

My original EF 14mm f/2.8L not only works great, the EOS-R defaults to correcting its distortion automatically! Most EF lenses introduced since about 1992 additionally will have correction for distortion and falloff, and even a digital lens optimizer. You can switch any of these added features off at MENU > CAMERA page 2 > Lens aberration correction.

Here are some of my weirder lenses with the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. All of them work the same:

Canon EOS-R and EF 14mm f/2.8 L on EF adapter

Canon EOS-R and EF 14mm f/2.8L on Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

Canon EOS-R and EF 14mm f/2.8 L on EF adapter

Canon EOS-R and EF 14mm f/2.8L on Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

Canon EOS-R and EF 50mm f/1 L on EF Adapter

Canon EOS-R and EF 50mm f/1.0 L on Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

Canon EOS-R and 50mm f/1 L on EF adapter

Canon EOS-R and EF 50mm f/1.0 L on Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R. bigger.

My 50mm f/1.0 seems to autofocus faster on my EOS-R than on any of my SLRs or DSLRs, and most importantly it always focuses perfectly, especially at f/1.0 where this lens sees as much as the human eye — something which no f/1.2 or f/0.95 lens can do.

The Mount Adapter EF-EOS R is all you need, but I prefer having an extra control ring so I use the Control Ring Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.

Ignore either of the Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A or Drop-in Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R with Drop-in Variable ND Filter A, unless you really use variable ND or polarizers, and don't have one for the front of your lens. I already use regular filters with my lenses; the reason for these is for use with very odd sized lenses for which it's easier to use a filter in the adapter rather than on the front of each lens.
