Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fuji & OM SYSTEM Menus ComparedCanon & OM SYSTEM are superb. Nikon is OK, while Sony & Fuji are awful. Here's why. This all-content, junk-free website's biggest source of support is when you use any of these links to approved sources when you get anything, regardless of the country in which you live. OM SYSTEM OM-1I thought my OM SYSTEM OM-1 had a better menu system than even Canon, and it became obvious after I created this graphic of the OM-1's eight main menu tabs: OM SYSTEM OM-1 Main Menu Tabs. Click any to enlarge. All are actual photos of the rear LCD shown here at lower resolution. See how each line item is the same color as the rest of its menu tab? This makes it easy to remember in what tab to find it next time. The OM SYSTEM OM-1 has eight main menu tabs, and none of them has more than eight well-marked and sorted pages underneath each so it's easy to find things again. The OM-1's menus are well thought out, well organized and a joy to use.
Canon EOS RCanon does the next best job with less color, but still color around each line item: Canon EOS R Menu Tabs. Click any to enlarge. All are actual photos of the rear LCD shown here at lower resolution. Canon's menu system also is great, having only six tabs and never more than 6 pages under any one tab. It's easy to find things the first time and the next time. Canon's menus are well thought out, well organized and a joy to use.
Nikon Z7Nikon (in this case the Z7) doesn't use color properly. While the screen is colorful and the menu tabs are different colors, every line item is the same yellow which is no help trying to find an item again: Nikon Z7 Menus. Click any to enlarge. All are actual photos of the rear LCD shown here at lower resolution. Nikon's menus are well thought out and work well, but the lack of using different colors makes it much more difficult to remember where to find things next time.
Sony A7 R IIISony has exactly the same problem, except that everything is the same orange, and worse than OM SYSTEM, Nikon and Canon, Sony has never gotten their menu items properly organized: Sony A7 R III Menu Tabs. Click any to enlarge. All are actual photos of the rear LCD shown here at lower resolution. Sony has only six primary menu tabs, and some of these have as many as 14 pages, so forget trying to remember how to find anything next time even if Sony did have a color menu system. Sadly Sony's menus are not well thought out and disorganized to the point that things aren't always where we'd expect them to be, and worse since they're all the same color, I've seen Sony's factory experts also have to go through the whole system when they want to find something again. Boo!
Fuji X-T30Fuji's menus are the worst in the industry, disorganized and with cryptic names. This is the weakest thing about Fuji's cameras. It's a bear trudging through all the menus. Everything looks the same: Fuji X-T30 Menu Tabs. Click any to enlarge. All are actual photos of the rear LCD shown here at lower resolution. These are devoid of color, so it's nearly impossible to have any clue where to find an item the next time we need it. Things are hidden, for instance why do they have a USER SETTING option? Isn't every item a user setting? USER SETTING is where they hide things like Card Format. Boo Fuji! Help Me Help You topI support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.
