Back to Nikon D300 Review

Here are some more shots from my Nikon D300. These were made with ADR (Adaptive Dynamic Range; my name for Nikon's misnamed Active D-Lighting) set to NORMAL. Saturation was set to +3, starting at the VIVID Picture control Setting.

All shots are exactly as the JPGs came from my D300. It is intriguing that they have none of the usual hideous color rings around the sun. These shots look BETTER than the sunset did in person!

You may scroll up and down the usual way, or try my NEXT buttons to save scrolling. Be careful: if you accidentally hit a NEXT button above an image, instead of the NEXT button at the end of the commentary, you'll skip past that image. skip to first image.

Sunset from Tower 29.

Sunset from Tower 29.

No grad filter, exactly as shot in JPG, ISO 100, f/8 @ 1/250, program exposure, matrix meter, -0.7 exposure compensation, 18-200mm VR at 24mm, hand-held. I use an uncoated Tiffen UV filter, and have no problems with ghosts.

My $4,500 D1H never could do this. It would have barfed on the highlights! It is impressive how natural this looks: full detail in the darks, and natural progression to white in the sun, just like film.

Microsurf from the Bluffs, California.

No filters, exactly as shot in JPG, ISO 400, f/8 @ 1/250, program exposure, matrix meter, no exposure compensation (too bad, would have looked better at -0.7), 80-400mm VR at 230mm, hand-held. Next Photo >>

In His Spirit, La Jolla, California.

Pacific Ocean looking towards Kauai.

No filters, exactly as shot in JPG with a little cropping, ISO 200, f/11 @ 1/2,000, program exposure, matrix meter, -0.7 exposure compensation, 400mm f/2.8 AF-I with TC-20E Teleconverter (equals 800mm). Actually I shot this November 29th, 2007, but didn't get to posting it until tonight, and it fits. I don't know if you can see it, but at ISO 200 I see just a little noise in the image. It reminds me of film.

That's it!
