Introduction       top

I love this little SUV that I brought home in May 2024. It's a blast to drive and very practical and economic as fancy cars go.

While our Panamera Turbo and LEMON Mercedes S580 had to be retired because their ultra-low profile 30 and 35-series tires were constantly having sidewall failures from potholes in the unmaintained roads where we live, this Macan, even with its exotic 21" Sport Classic Wheels and 35 and 40-series tires, hasn't had any tire problems — and easily goes through our local car wash so we don't have to pay for a detailer every week as we did with the others. It's all about having a taller sidewall than the depth of the potholes.

The Macan is agile, precise and sure-footed, like a really great lightweight competition mountain bike.

It's a 2020 model, which I prefer to the newest design because my 2020 model has real switches for all its controls rather than the shiny black void of nothingness similar to my Typ 971 Panamera Turbo. While the newer style looks cool at a distance, real buttons work and feel much better, with real clicks, compared to the wishy-washy fake electronic clicks of the blank plastic of newer styles.

I also love the real, legible gauges with vivid red needles I can read out of the corner of my eyes while driving rather than the anonymous white needles of the newer models. I'll also be honest that a real needle looks and reads much more clearly and faster than any LCD imitations as common today in my BMW 850i Convertible, X5M Competition and, yes my Typ 971 Panamera Turbo. You can't beat the legibility of a red needle on black, with white markings.

All Macans are different.

Two things I love on this one is that the magnificent 18-way seats, which are one of the best things about this Macan, were only a $380 additional charge. Heck, I never realized that my $185,000 Panamera Turbo only had the crappy 14-way seats until I sat in my Macan's glorious thrones!

The "Leather Package in Black" is well worth the $1,740 as Porsche options go (unlike the ludicrous $5,260 vanity 21"wheel option). The leather option covers the dashboard and side and center arm rests with fine Corinthian leather and makes this interior feel like those in my six-figure price tag cars:

Good       intro       top

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com This is an agile little car; as SUVs go it's very low to the ground so it doesn't wobble all over.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smooth and nimble, it does everything well. It's extremely comfortable and handles like a dream.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Great ergonomics; everything is well thought out and easy to use. Once you've suffered with a poorly designed car like my Mercedes S580 you'll appreciate how much better an ergonomically well-designed car is to operate.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The 18-way seats are heaven. We all have different butts, but for mine it's not that everything is adjustable as much as the 18-way seats have huge adjustable side bolsters to hold me tight. The bottom and back side bolsters are air cushions, filled with an air pump as you adjust them with the switches.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The opulent Leather Package interior option makes this feel like cars with double the price tag, with leather all over the center console, door arm rests and dashboard.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Turbo 4-zyl engine has as much power as regular V8s used to have. There's no need for the V6 Macan S or more unless you're still thinking in the pre-turbo world where engines put out half the power they do today. Remember the astounding Porsche 928 and 928S of 1978-1984 immortalized in Risky Business, Weird Science and Scarface? Its V8 had less power (219 hp in the 928 or 242 hp in the 928S) than this turbo 4! Al Pacino refers to the 928 as a "Tiger," which is what "Macan" means!

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Turbo 4-zyl engine is good on gas, too. Typical freeway MPG:

Porsche Macan Freeway MPG

Porsche Macan Typical Freeway Miles per Gallon. bigger.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smooth engine and smooth at idle; much smoother than Mercedes' chuggy 4-zylinder engines.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Little to no engine sound while at a constant speed.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The engine hums smoothly at full power rather than buzz or sound raspy.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The PDK double-clutch transmission is magic. While everyone knows it shifts instantly, what makes it magic is that it’s so well programmed that you can’t feel it shift! It's like driving a Tesla; you can't hear or feel a thing as it shifts up and down.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com The PDK shifts into neutral and idles while coasting, and magically revs back up as you tap the gas to get back in gear seamlessly. The computer syncs engine revs with up and downshifts so it's all brilliantly seamless.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com It will instantly downshift as many gears as needed to when you hit it, and for normal driving it's quiet and docile parking and maneuvering at slow speeds.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Wireless CarPlay.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) rocks; it works brilliantly in traffic with all its RADARs and cameras.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com So long as you're moving, you can engage the ACC at any speed. Engage it while rolling at less than 20 MPH and it will set 20 MPH.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Smart automatic windshield wipers don't wipe the window if it's dry and you left the lever in the INTermittent position from yesterday. (Other cars will wipe once across a dry windshield when you restart their engines the next day).

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Compact spare tire in the trunk; none of this run-flat nonsense of my BMWs or the can of fix-a-flat that comes with my Mercedes.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Much better interior quality than in my LEMON Mercedes S580: the Macan has metal interior door pulls and shift paddles, while they're crappy silver-painted plastic in my S580 for twice the price.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com While everyone was afraid that the rear seats were tiny, this tiny SUV still has plenty of room for four six-footers. (There are three rear seats but I haven't tried stuffing five adults in.)

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Glass roof is wonderful when you're sitting in the back:

Ryan driving the Porsche Macan

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Its headlights have automatic cornering lights that turn on as needed, and the main beams automatically steer themselves as you turn the wheel.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Automatic high beams also work great.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Big cup holders; huge for a German-made car. (Just normal sized for US-market cars.)

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com MADE IN LEIPZIG, GERMANY. This isn't some Pseudo-German SUV actually made by Mercedes in Alabama or by BMW in South Carolina.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Excellent Forward Visibility. Thinner-than-usual windshield pillars (A-pillars) and extra glass (rather than a black area) near the outside mirrors leads to much better forward visibility due to much smaller blind zones than most cars. This is a huge help seeing cars or pedestrians approaching you from the left at an intersection:

2020 Porsche Macan

Narrow A-pillar and a bonus tiny window ahead of the side mirror gives much better forward visibility than most other cars (other cars usually have a black panel ahead of the mirror rahter than more glass). Porsche Macan, Saturday, 4:27 PM, 01 June 2024. bigger.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com If the motorized rear hatch hits something and stops, it's much easier than other cars to lift it back open manually.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com HD FM radio reception much more sensitive than the HD radios in my other cars. IN locations where my favorite stations were too weak for good reception, they come in uninterrupted in my Macan.

green ball icon © KenRockwell.com Big, legible clock with big red hands in the center of the dashboard:

2020 Porsche Macan Clock

Porsche Macan Clock. bigger.

The minute and second hands move in full minutes or seconds; the minute hand jumps a full minute each time rather than moving continuously. As seen above, the minute hand stays on the minute at 8:12 rather than being halfway to 8:13.

Hint: Avoid the foolish Sport Chrono package as we had on our Panamera Turbo because it replaces this great clock with a useless one-handed version! Likewise avoid the 2022 and newer models as they turned the red gauge neeldes and clock hands to white, which don't stand out against the black face and white letters as God and Dr. Porsche intended.

Bad       intro       top

Not much; here are the worst things about my Macan:

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Wider-than-usual B-pillars (between front and rear seats) lead to a big blind spot around your 7-to-9 o'clock position as you turn your head to try check behind to your left.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com The sun visors are relatively narrow and don't pull-out (extend) from their pivoted ends, so you can't pull them back towards you when they're pulled to the side windows. Unless you're short you most likely won't be able to keep the sun out of your eyes heading north late in the afternoon or south early in the morning. I'm 6 feet (183 cm) tall and there's a large area to my immediate right that I can't block with the visor when I need it.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com The integrated garage-door opener controls have to be held down for a second to work; you can't just tap them.

red ball icon © KenRockwell.com Oddly the clock doesn't always sync to GPS or even keep the same time each time the Macan is started, even though I have the Sync to GPS option clicked. Most other modern cars are always correct, while every so often I'll notice the clock is a minute or two slow.

yellow ball icon © KenRockwell.com I see this as simply normal for a fastback (sloped-rear) car, but some magazine writers who don't actualky own this car as I do complain that the rear visibility is limited — duh. Hey, when you're from New York and drive a Porsche, whatever's going on behind you doesn't matter — it's history. I've never had a problem; it has rear-looking Doppler RADAR to warn you if you're about to change lanes into someone.

Missing       intro       top

Of course this will vary depending on what you order, and some of these features may not be available on any Macan, but on my Macan there's:

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No massage seats.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com Heated and cooled seats, but no center console or door arm rest or steering wheel heaters.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No cooled or heated cup holders as we have on my BMW X5M Competition.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No kick-the-bumper-to-open-the-rear-hatch feature as on my my BMW X5M Competition, BMW M850i Converible and LEMON Mercedes S580.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No wireless phone charging.

gray ball icon © KenRockwell.com No full screen CarPlay; CarPlay only fills about half the screen at best. I guess Porsche drivers are too cool for CarPlay, but at least the basic car controls on the left of the screen are always available. (Our Panamera Turbo Typ 971 is the same.)

Final Drive
4.67*

*While Porsche says the base Macan has 4.13:1 final drive ratio, my tachometer reads 1,730 RPM at 60 MPH in top gear, while math tells me it should be 1,530 RPM with a 4:13 ratio (712.5 tire revs/mile × 4.13 final drive × 0.52 top gear = 1,530 RPM). The 4.67 final drive, standard on the GTS, would change the calculation to 712.5 tire revs/mile × 4.67 final drive × 0.52 top gear = 1,730 RPM, so I'm going with a 4:67:1 final drive. I'll betcha this secretly came along with the 21" sport wheel & tire option.

Performance       top

6.3 s 0-60 MPH.

16.3 s 0-160 kmph (99.4 MPH)

The turbo 4-zyl engine has more than enough power for responsible driving. It has twice the power of a typical, non-turbo, economy car engine (248 hp versus 124 hp), and has more power than the V8 of the astounding Porsche 928 and 928S of 1978-1984 immortalized in Risky Business,  Weird Science and Scarface, which only had 219 hp in the 928 or 242 hp in the 928S.

It's good on gas, responsive and has no turbo lag, unlike the huge lag in my Cayenne Turbo S.

It has plenty of power at legal speeds.

What it lacks, in exchange for saving thousands of dollars on gasoline, tires, brakes and oil over the years, is that it doesn't keep accelerating like a rocket ship above freeway speeds. While my 500+ and 600 hp turbo V8s keep accelerating like crazy above 100 MPH, this civilized Macan starts to lose steam at fast highway speeds.

The reality is that this basic Macan has just the right amount of power today (double that of a normal car), and doesn't eat through tires, brakes and gasoline like the overpowered cars pimped by car magazines and commercial websites that are funded by advertising from car companies. Those sources aren't your friends; they're in the pockets of the auto makers and almost always encourage us to pay more for the bigger engine which makes a lot more money for the car companies that pay them — it's one big circle game.

It's not like 20 years ago when the base models of many cars could be underpowered; today the base Macan has plenty of power. In fact, it's 0-60 time is the same as my V8 1997 Mercedes SL500 which was among the world's most powerful cars when it came out, and also the same as my V8 2002 Mercedes E430, which these same magazines described as "an executive rocket ship" when it came out.

Honestly, when you convert from the gross horsepower ratings used before 1973 to the net ratings used today, this little 4-zylinder engine has about the same power output as the 455 CID V8 in my 1970 GTO! It has almost as much power as the first V12s had in the late 1990s! Cars have become wildly powerful in recent years; there's no need for V8s or even V6s for actual driving.

Having owned quite a few 500+ hp turbo V8 cars (Cayenne Turbo S, Typ 971 Panamera Turbo, BMW 850i Convertible and a 617 hp BMW X5M Competition and I forget what else), I'll admit that I feel really foolish having paid so much for buying and operating such stupidly powerful cars when I realize that, except for when I first played with them when got them, you never can get your foot to the floor in real-world driving because these super cars are already going faster than you want before your foot ever gets to the floor! Supercars are that powerful today.

This basic Macan is perfect because you actually can get your foot on the floor now and then passing on the freeway, so I don't feel like I got oversold on power. A turbo 4 is plenty today, a turbo 6 is more than enough and a turbo V8 is waaaaaaay more than enough.

All decent cars have way more than enough power today; it's crazy how some old-time hot-rodders like me (my first car out of college was a 1970 GTO convertible with a 455 CID HO V8 and a 4-speed) still think we need V8s.

Measurements       top

Rear Cargo Dimensions

Rated 17.6 ft3 seats up and under the hatch cover as shown below, or 52.9 ft3 seats down and filled to the ceiling.

Good is that the cargo area is mostly rectangular, not wasting space with little carve-outs.

It has a three-way folding split rear seat:

2020 Porsche Macan

bigger.

The range of measurements are because it's smaller at the sides than in the center of the cargo bay:

41-42" wide at the floor, 40" wide at pivoting shelf height and 41" wide at the top of the rear hatch.

28-28¾" tall at the rear hatch opening, with the pivoting tray removed.

35-37.5" deep at the floor with the rear seats up as shown, and 66-70" deep with the rear seats folded. 59" deep at height of the pivoting tray with the rear seats folded down. This is less than at the floor height as the front seats angle backwards.

47" diagonally across the rear hatch opening. This is good to know as it's how you fit flat artwork.

USB-C Charging

The USB-C charge outlets are basic.

I measure only 4.4V at 2.53A = 11¼ watts from the single front outlet. (Two more are in back).

If you want more power or more outlets, I use the mighty Anker 535 charger plugged into the 12V outlet, which I measure really does put out at least 60W, and is rated for 67W from its various outputs. it has two USB-C and one USB-A so my guests are all covered on road trips.

For a basic and powerful charger with more than enough power to charge iPhones and iPad Pros at their fastest rates, even the less expensive Anker 323 charger popped into a 12V outlet is rated for 30W over USB-C (20V at 1.5A) and actually puts out about 32W USB-C.

The left switch controls the rear window wiper. Lift the stalk to the INT / LO / HI settings for the front windshield wiper, or tap it down for a 1× wipe. Pull it towards you to wash. The switch on the right end of the stalk controls the speed of the automatic control while in the INTermittent setting.

Hidden Door Lock Button

The keyless ("Porsche Entry & Drive") locking button is a nearly invisible dimple molded into each of the four door handles. It's towards the rear on the outside of each handle. You really need to look closely for it, or try feeling for it the first time:

Once you've found it, you need to hold a finger on it for a second or so until it locks. You can't just tap and run as we often can on BMW and Mercedes.

It doens't click, it's simply a contact sensor.

Garage Door Opener Programming

The garage door opener remote buttons are marked |, || and ||| on the right side of the overhead console:

Automatic Power Windows

The windows only go all the way up or down automatically with the ignition on. With the ignition off, the windows only move while you hold the switch.

Adaptive Cruise Control

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) doesn't restart after a stop; you have to tap RESUME (up) on the cruise control lever (on the left under the turn-signal stalk).

Automatic Parking Brake

To get the parking brake to engage automatically when you've arrived, be sure to shut off the ignition and wait a second before you remove your seat belt or shift to park. If you remove your belt first, you'll have to pull up on the parking brake switch to engage it.

It doesn't always care when you put the shift lever in PARK, but often you have to wait a second for the parking brake to apply itself.

It disengages automatically when you put the car in Drive or Reverse and start to drive.

Help Me Help You       top

I support my growing family through this website, as crazy as it might seem.

The biggest help is when you use any of these links when you get anything. It costs you nothing, and is this site's, and thus my family's, biggest source of support. These places always have the best prices and service, which is why I've used them since before this website existed. I recommend them all personally.

If you find this page as helpful as a book you might have had to buy or a workshop you may have had to take, feel free to help me continue helping everyone.

If you've gotten your gear through one of my links or helped otherwise, you're family. It's great people like you who allow me to keep adding to this site full-time. Thanks!

If you haven't helped yet, please do, and consider helping me with a gift of $5.00.

Thanks for reading!
