I wanted light in the shadows and there was no sky in the picture, so I used no filter. This makes blues — or shadows which are also blue – get a bit lighter than they seem to our eyes.

More technical details. bigger.

I wanted a nearly black sky, so I used the extra Deep Red 091 (29) filter. I stopped short of adding a polarizer as that would be too much.

Laugh all you want, but it takes a long time to position my camera to put the rocks in my frame with this relationship between the two or three of them and the edges of my frame.

I bracketed this a stop over and a stop under, but my first shot here was right-on. Bracketing is for the weak.

Big Pile of Tires in a Small Room, Route 66

Big Pile of Tires in a Small Room, Route 66, 5:23 P.M. 1989 Hasselblad 903 SWC, no filter, 6 foot focus distance , Kodak T-Max 100 in 1993 A12 magazine, f/16 for one minute. More technical details. bigger.

My Gossen Luna Pro SBC read EV 3 at EI 100, and I wanted f/16 for optimum sharpness throughout the room.

EV 3 is 30 seconds at f/16. TMAX 100's reciprocity failure tells us to use one minute if the meter reads 30 seconds, so voilà, one minute at f/16.

Amboy Post Office at Dusk, Route 66

Amboy Post Office at Dusk, Route 66, 5:48 P.M. 1993 Zeiss Planar T✻ 80mm f/2.8 CF with Hasselblad B60 CR 1,5 warming filter, 200 foot focus distance, 1992 Hasselblad 503 CX with 1985 PME metered prism, Fuji Velvia in 1996 Hasselblad E24 magazine, f/8 at 2½ minutes. More technical details. bigger.

My Gossen Luna Pro SBC read EV 0 at ISO 40. I needed f/8 to get the best sharpness and depth of field. At f/8, EV 0 needs 1 minute of exposure time.

My reciprocity calculations (actually a sticker I put on my meter) tell me to use 2½ minutes to get the right exposure on film for 1 minute as read on the meter, so I used f/8 at 2½ minutes.

This is easy to do if the light is constant, but it changes rapidly as day turns to night. Over the course of this exposure the measured light level changed by a stop or two! In these cases, it's all art and intuition. I tend to keep measuring the light as the exposure continues, and usually add time to taste, expecting that I have to get most of my exposure on film at the beginning of the exposure, while the darker end of the exposure tends to pick up other subtleties.

Roy's Sign by Starlight, Amboy, Route 66

Roy's Sign by Starlight, Route 66, 5:22 ~ 5:55 P.M. 1993 Zeiss Planar T✻ 80mm f/2.8 CF with Hasselblad B60 CR 1,5 warming filter, 50 foot focus distance, 1992 Hasselblad 503 CX with 1985 PME metered prism, Fuji Velvia in 1996 Hasselblad E24 magazine, f/5.6 at 3 minutes and 33 seconds. bigger.

My Gossen Luna Pro SBC read EV -1 at ISO 40 at the beginning of the exposure. I chose f/5.6 to get the lack of vignetting I wanted, and EV -1 at f/5.6 needs 1 minute on the meter.

My reciprocity calculations tell me to use 2½ minutes to get the right exposure on film for 1 minute as read on the meter, so I used f/5.6 and started my exposure. As the exposure continued the light dropped to EV -2, so I sat around for a total of 3½ minutes.

The streaks in the sky are star trails.

From here we headed to Peggy Sue's for dinner, a photo of which you can see at technical details.
