California's Central Coast
11 12 13 14 15 April 2012

12 April 2012, Thursday       top

Today Dave and I finished some last-minute scouting. A cataclysmic storm was predicted, so we wanted to polish our plan B for rain.

We headed to Port San Luis.

Porthole, Port San Luis Harbor

Freezer Handle, Port San Luis Harbor

Yellow Curb, Port San Luis Harbor

Yellow Curb, Port San Luis Harbor, 11:23 AM. (Fuji X-Pro1 with Fuji XR 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, f/6.4 at 1/350 at AUTO ISO 800.)

This shot is just a yellow line, not a curb.

Port San Luis Harbor Pier

This snap is all about the three red dots. It's got nothing to do with stop signs, in fact if I wasn't so lazy, I would have painted-out the STOP and just left the sign red.

Time for lunch back in town.

Red Seats, Arroyo Grande Taco Bell

We met the group at 3 PM at our motel, and wandered into San Luis Obispo's Farmer's Market.

Pub, San Luis Obispo

Goodness, this camera and lens are super-sharp, even at f/1.4 at ISO 100. Check out the ORIGINAL © FILE, noting that very little, like the lowest neon, is in focus.

We thought we were going to escape the rain, but we heard a flash of lighting and heard a muffled rumble of thunder later, so we still considered ourselves safe.

A short while later, it started to rain, and then rain harder and harder.

Wineman Hotel, San Luis Obispo

Hotel, San Luis Obispo, 7:38 PM. (Fuji X-Pro1 with Fuji XR 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, f/1.4 at 1/70 at AUTO ISO 800.)

The hard rain turned to heavy rain and the heavy rain turned into sheets of rain. The sheets of rain turned to hail the size of golf balls!

Chorro Storm, San Luis Obispo

You folks from México will get a kick out of the street name: Chorro! How appropriate.

Hail Storm, San Luis Obispo

Hailstorm! 7:41 PM. (Fuji X-Pro1 with Fuji XR 35mm f/1.4 ASPH, f/1.4 at 1/52 at AUTO ISO 1,250.)

We were under an awning, thank goodness.

The hail turned back into heavy rain, at which point we made a break for it to run seven blocks back to our cars.

Here's a snap made as we ran. The Fujifilm X-Pro1 excels at grab shots; I had no time to set anything:

Red and Green, Arroyo Grande

It's night-night time.

That's all for today. NEXT ->> Friday
