And then we scoped out a local repair marina.

Snapped with a Canon SD980 IS. I turned on the flash as fill to light Dave's face, which otherwise would have been dark and without form.

We then hiked Abbotts Lagoon to watch night fall.

It was starting to get dark, so this is the first image where the SD980 had to bump the Auto ISO above 80, to 1/30 at f/2.8 at ISO 100.

It was now dark, so Auto ISO pulled ISO 800, and P mode chose 1/20 at f/4. Zoom was set to 7.7mm, or about 50mm equivalent. As everything, this is hand-held. Do you think I was going to carry a tripod around a lagoon all night? No way José!

Sunset, Abbotts Lagoon, West Marin, California, 8:02 PM.

Snapped with a Canon SD980 IS.

I used fill-flash to highlight the foreground, which otherwise would have been all black. The SD980 is smart enough to have pulled Auto ISO up to ISO 500, so that the last vestiges of sunset were light enough to be seen as they are here at 1/60 at f/2.8, zoom at 4.3mm (24mm equivalent).

This, like everything else, was snapped at my usual default settings. Auto ISO grabbed ISO 800, and the hand-held exposure was 0.4 seconds at f/2.8.

Considering that I have no problem shooting this little IS camera hand-held by moonlight, I fail to see the point of tripods or the higher ISOs of DSLRs. All I carried was a tiny camera in my pocket, and I could leave all the DSLR and tripod baggage at home.

I have a much better time when I'm not carrying ten pounds — or more — of camera gear.
