This evening, Ryan spontaneously picked up my dial scale and decided to measure and log the weights or two of his toys. He also was curious to see what each weighed alone, as well as together. He got out the scale and asked for a sheet of paper all by himself; this was all his idea. Since my scale reads in pounds and fractions (not ounces), I then taught him about fractions. Fractions are important; thank goodness I have a dial scale (one with a needle and dial instead of just digits) to illustrate fractions so well. I remember when I was in second grade and the teacher asked the class something like "We all know three can't be divided by two." I replied, "Baloney, it's one-and-a-half." This astonished the teacher, as none of us in second grade were supposed to know fractions. She then attempted to embarrass me into submission by asking me if I was so smart if I'd like to step up and teach the rest of the class, and I surprised her again by accepting her challenge and teaching until she got tired of it and offered to step back up herself. Anyway, Ryan's spontaneous curiosity is what happens when kids aren't made stupid by parents who would prefer to use video games or TV as a babysitter. Ryan weighing his electronic drum stick. Ryan's lab notes: "Ryan's BeACh BALL 1/16. DRUMSTICK 1/4. BeACHBALL AND DRumSTICK 5/16. The corrections are because Ryan hadn't learned to zero the scale first, so we had some re-dos after I showed him. (Canon 6D, Canon EF 35mm f/1.4 L, Auto ISO 200, 6 sharpening, -2 contrast, manual card white balance, 1/125 at f/2.8, Perfectly Clear automatic correction Photoshop plug-in to remove color cast.)
